written in Koyasan during a stay in Muryoko-in temple; Nara; Kyoto; the island of Shikoku; Ocean Ferry Tokyo, and Tokyo.  See also my letter to Habukava sensei, abbot of Muryoko-in. The numbers above the haikus indicate the order of writing. I use them too in order to give some background information.

The pack consists of fifty-two cards, viz., 13 sets of four cards, all four bearing the same title. One card in each set is a Leading card, and shows on its face the first line of the other three haikus.
The game may be played by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 players. Give seven cards per player, after the cards have been shuffled, cut, and dealt one at a time face downward to each player in rotation. The remaining cards are kept as reserve.
The player to the dealer’s left begins the play. If the player is able to quote from memor y the haiku of a missing card in a Leading set, he then calls upon the other players to hand him the card with the haiku. If successful, he continues to complete his set. If the player is not able to quote from memor y, he calls upon anyone he pleases to hand him one of the cards required to make up the set. If successful, and he can complete the set from his hand, he must do so; but if he cannot, he draws one card from the reser ve, and the other player goes on. The winner of the game is the one who completes the most sets.
